Perfect PS5 Settings for 120 FPS in Fortnite [Multiplayer]

If you’re playing Fortnite on a PlayStation 5 and still stuck at 60 FPS, you’re not getting the best experience the game has to offer.

I didn’t realize this myself until a few months into playing.

I assumed the PS5 would automatically push Fortnite to its max settings, but that’s not the case. Out of the box, the console limits Fortnite to 60 FPS unless you make a few changes.

Once I figured it out and switched to 120 FPS, the difference was immediate. The gameplay felt smoother, aiming was sharper, and multiplayer matches became way more responsive.

If you’ve got a PS5 and a compatible display, this guide will walk you through the settings you need to enable 120 FPS in Fortnite.  Find the perfect deals for purchasing Fortnite on PlayStation 5.

What You Need Before Changing Any Settings

Before diving into your PS5 menus, there are a few things you need to have in place.

These are hardware-related, and without them, the 120 FPS setting won’t even show up in Fortnite.

A 120Hz Monitor or TV

Your display must support at least a 120Hz refresh rate. This is the most important requirement. If your monitor or TV is capped at 60Hz, Fortnite can’t go any higher, even if your PS5 can.

Some newer gaming monitors (even budget ones) offer 120Hz or 144Hz support, so if you’re using a basic TV or an older monitor, it might be time for an upgrade.

An HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 Cable

Use the HDMI cable that came with your PS5. It’s HDMI 2.1 and supports the full range of performance features. If you’re using a cheaper or older HDMI cable, it could be limiting your output to 60Hz without you realizing it.

The Right HDMI Port

Make sure your PS5 is connected to the port labeled HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1, or one that specifically mentions “120Hz support.”

Once these basics are covered, you can move on to the settings.

Step 1: Switch Your PS5 to Performance Mode

From the PS5 home screen, go to

  • Settings
  • Then select ‘Saved Data’.
  • Next, go to Game or App Settings
  • Select Game Presets

Here, you’ll see an option called Performance Mode or Resolution Mode. By default, it’s set to Game Default, which lets each individual game decide how it runs. For Fortnite, we want to override that.

Set this option to Performance Mode.

This tells the PS5 to prioritize frame rate over resolution in supported games.

Step 2: Enable 120Hz Output in Video Settings

Head to:

Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output

Scroll down to 120Hz Output and set it to Automatic.

This allows the console to output up to 120 frames per second when your display supports it. If it’s set to Off, Fortnite won’t give you the option for high frame rates, no matter what other settings you tweak.

Optional: Lower Your Resolution

While you’re in the video settings, consider setting the resolution to 1080p. I did this to reduce the workload on the system, especially during intense multiplayer moments. The visual difference wasn’t huge, but it helped the game run more consistently at high FPS.

Step 3: Turn On 120 FPS Mode in Fortnite

Now, launch Fortnite.

Once the game loads, open Settings from the main menu and go to the Video tab. Scroll down until you see the 120 FPS Mode option.

Turn it On and hit Apply.

That’s it. You should now be running Fortnite at 120 FPS on your PS5.

If the option doesn’t show up, double-check everything from earlier steps. I had to restart my PS5 once before the setting finally appeared, so don’t worry if it takes a bit.

Still Not Seeing 120 FPS? Here’s What to Check

If everything looks correct but Fortnite still isn’t showing the 120 FPS option, here are a few things that helped me or other players I’ve talked to:

  • Check your cable: Make sure you’re using HDMI 2.0 or higher. HDMI 1.0 doesn’t support 120Hz.
  • Test another HDMI port: Some displays only support 120Hz on specific ports.
  • Confirm your display’s refresh rate: You can check this in your monitor or TV’s menu. If it’s only 60Hz, you’ll need a new display to get 120 FPS.
  • Restart the console and the game after changing settings.
  • Update Fortnite: Sometimes a patch can cause the settings to disappear until it’s updated.

If you’ve done everything and still can’t enable it, reach out to Epic Games Support. You can go to their website, scroll to the bottom, and use the Contact Us link. Let them know your Epic ID and explain that you’ve followed the setup instructions with compatible hardware.

My Final Thoughts

Getting Fortnite to run at 120 FPS on PS5 isn’t difficult. It just requires a few settings changes and the right hardware. Once it’s set up, the improvement in gameplay is immediate.

Even if you’re not playing competitively, I still think it’s worth switching. The game feels more polished and reactive. So if you’re new to PS5 or haven’t touched your system settings much, I hope this guide helped clear things up. Make the changes, test it out, and see the difference for yourself.
